Can You Waterproof Leather?
Leather is a natural product and like human skin it has pores. It may be durable, but it is impossible to 100% waterproof it. This does not mean we can not put a protective coat on our leather to help shield it from the elements. Proper care of your leather should always be a priority. We choose to waterproof because it adds longevity to our leather.
What happens if something does not get waterproofed?
Waterproofing will not only help preserve the look of your leather piece, but it will also prolong its life span. A great example of a leather product that you would want to waterproof is leather shoes.
Fun fact: Did you know that your shoes are the first thing that someone notices about you? Lead researchers at the University of Kansas did a study in 2012 and found that “you can accurately judge 90% of a stranger’s personality by simply looking at their shoes”. So why would it not be important to care about how your shoes look? You invested in a great accessory, so let’s take care of them! There is also the danger of the shoes getting moldy. Once mold starts to form this could mean the end of your leather. Who wants that?
Here at Mad Cow, we have a super cool waterproofer that really does work. We are proud to offer eco-friendly products, which is why we only use all-natural ingredients. One of the main ingredients is tea tree oil extract and a Carnauba Wax dispersion. The cool thing about Carnauba Wax is that it is one of the strongest of the natural waxes. The stronger the wax the better protection you will have on your leather products. This product is not just a reapply every day, it offers long lasting protection on your leather. It is easy to apply, and you do not need gloves during the application, because there are no harsh chemicals in our product. To top it all off our product are handmade in the United States.
How do I apply?
For this application, you will first need to remove and excess dirt. Spray the waterproofer until the item is completely coated. We recommend two to three applications to make sure it’s protected. The amount of application will be reliant to the amount of exposure your leather has to the elements. Mad Cow’s leather cream and dressing also have waterproofing qualities in them. The waterproofer is not just for leather, it is ideal for most non-leather materials as well. All it takes is a few moments of your time and about an hour to dry. Now you are good to go dancing in the rain!
